Local Government Network
The TPA Local Government Network exists to support and advance the practice of transport professionals working in, or closely aligned with, local government.
It provides a dedicated platform to strengthen capability, foster collaboration, and deliver better transport outcomes for communities across Australia.
The Network recognises the critical role local government plays in delivering transport solutions and responds to strong member demand for greater connection, practical support, and targeted professional development.
Role and Functions of the Local Government Network
- Support transport professionals in local government to improve practice and deliver better community outcomes
- Provide a platform for knowledge sharing, peer learning and the exchange of practical experience by council transport practitioners
- Build strong connections between local government practitioners across regions, states and nationally
- Facilitate collaboration on common challenges, including regional issues, resource constraints and emerging priorities
- Contribute to the development and delivery of TPA’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program
- Provide a local government voice into TPA policy, advocacy and industry initiatives
- Support advocacy for improved standards, policy and investment relevant to local government transport outcomes
- Integrate local government perspectives into broader TPA activities, including national conferences and events
How is it different?
While many organisations represent councils or the broader planning and infrastructure system, TPA is the national peak body for transport professionals. Our focus is on technical excellence, evidence‑based practice and professional capability - not lobbying on behalf of employers or asset owners.
For local government professionals, this means:
- Deep, technical transport content covering planning, engineering, modelling, policy and delivery.
- Peer‑to‑peer learning led by practitioners, not sales‑driven or product‑focused presentations.
- A "safe space" for local government transport professionals to share their experiences with each other.
- National consistency and professional standards that strengthen credibility within your organisation and with external stakeholders.
This professional focus is what sets TPA apart - and why a dedicated Local Government Network within TPA adds value beyond existing council or policy forums.
