Speakers
Stuart Baird | City of Hobart
After graduating from UTAS, Stuart started out a varied engineering career with time spent in both consulting outfits and industry working on high rise building in Melbourne, gold and nonferrous mining and processing industry in WA, Canada and Alaska, interspersed with wastewater and water treatment in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania along with all the other little things that pop up in the consulting and project world. Determined to settle down a little bit he has spent his last 20 years or so in transport planning and project delivery here in Tasmania for both the (then) DIER and most recently the City of Hobart.
Whilst with DIER, he was part of the project team which developed the IAP (Intelligent Access Program) and opened the eyes of SCOT and Australian road agencies to the possibilities of Intelligent Transport Systems. Over the past 20 years he has also seen first-hand how the current transport system is failing our community. Stuart will discuss “The Big Ideas” topic drawing on these experiences.
Stuart’s special interest and passion is pursuing the fabled work/life balance by trying to spend more time in remote places with Madeleine than he does at work.
Brad Scouller | GHD
Brad is a leading transportation planner and project manager with GHD. Based in South East Queensland, he has nearly 20 years of experience planning major transportation projects across road, rail, bus and active transport modes. Owing from his near decade working for Queensland public transport authority Translink, Brad specialises in public transport, with his experience covering major busways, bus priority corridors, heavy and light rail corridors, transit interchanges and bus stops – many hundreds of bus stops. As such, his experience is well placed to talk about buses – and how Hobart might be able to fall in love with its buses
Kylie Murphy | Brighton Council
Kylie has spent over 20 years championing Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD), believing that every community holds the keys to its own success. As Community Development Officer at Brighton Council, she works shoulder-to-shoulder with young people, community, local groups, and organisations to uncover strengths, spark ideas, and turn them into action. Her Master’s thesis explored how ABCD in Tasmanian councils can transform health and wellbeing outcomes. Kylie is a 2025 Churchill Fellowship recipient. Kylie’s projects share one thing in common; putting people at the heart of change and proving that great things grow from the ground up.
Brighton Council will be sharing valuable knowledge gathered through community engagement and surveys on transport within the municipality. This work highlights the challenges and concerns raised by the community, while also shining a light on unexpected heroes, innovative ideas, and partnerships that are emerging
Gerry White | Circular Economy Huon
As a member of Circular Economy Huon community group, Gerry has been researching, and advocating for improved transport in the Huon and southern Tasmania for the last 8 years. Prior to moving to the Huon, he and his wife developed and ran a tourism business with vineyard and cottages. He holds postgraduate qualifications in tourism from the University of Surrey, and a Bachelor and Masters in Education. He has worked in England, Central Australia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and Hobart.
Circular Economy Huon will outline how through consulting widely and eclectically, while operating outside the structures of government and business, we have developed a transport model for the region. With a focus on equity, broad community benefit and making transport circular there is a need for far reaching change that is achievable in smaller steps
