About this event
Join us at the 2026 Transport Practice Workshop which will provide an excellent opportunity for members, industry professionals, traffic engineers, transport and land use planners and elected representatives to:
Increase their knowledge;
- Exchange ideas and research;
- Develop professional networks;
- Enhance their skills in traffic engineering and transport planning; and
- Keep up to date with the latest techniques and guidelines.
At this workshop, practitioners will explore fresh perspectives on road safety, parking standards and design, cycleway and road design, sustainable and active transport, and the evolving role of traffic data including hearing from a thought‑provoking panel sharing insights on key issues facing today’s transport professionals.

Speakers
Arjan Rensen, Director Road Design and Traffic Engineering, Transport for NSW
Arjan Rensen is the Director Road Design and Traffic Engineering for Transport for NSW, responsible to drive best practice within the roads and transport engineering disciplines for our customers and communities.
This includes the responsibility to keep Transport’s standards for road design, traffic engineering and temporary traffic management up to date and to make sure these standards are applied properly when delivering infrastructure to the community.
Arjan is passionate about identifying and implementing innovative solutions and processes to improve existing practices in how we plan, build and maintain our road and transport networks. His aim is to fully achieve the perceived benefits of new concepts for the benefit of the community.
Val Stamper | Road Safety Officer | City of Sydney
Val Stamper is a passionate and experienced educator, graduating from Leeds Metropolitan University with a Bachelor of Education (Hons). Val was a primary school teacher for eight years, teaching in London and Auckland, culminating in a leadership role as Head of Department.
Val has more than two decades of experience delivering both school and community-based educational road safety programs in New Zealand and Australia. While in New Zealand, Val worked for seven years as a Regional Coordinator of a national project (RoadSense) for New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), after which she worked with Auckland Transport as a School Transport Coordinator.
She is currently a Road Safety Officer with City of Sydney, where she develops and delivers behavioural-focused road safety initiatives at a local level, as part of the State Government’s Local Government Road Safety Program (LGRSP).
Prior to joining the City of Sydney, Val held the same role at City of Canada Bay and Lane Cove Council.
Peter Wright | Road Safety Officer | City of Sydney
Peter has been a Road Safety Officer for over 18 years. He started his road safety journey working as a Project Officer for the Welsh Assembly Government in the United Kingdom and establishing a motorcycle training partnership with Dyfed-Powys Police.
After moving to Australia Peter then immersed himself in the Local Government Road Safety Program. Partnering with Transport for NSW since 2010 (15 Years) and working at several Local Government organisations including Hornsby and Northern Beaches councils before working for the City of Sydney in 2014.
Peter’s work has seen him be a finalist at the National Road Safety Awards on two occasions and he has overseen a comprehensive road safety program.
Michael Dixon | Transport Planning Leader | KBR
Michael is a transport planning and engineering leader with a diverse background in network planning, management, operations, road safety and people management across State and Local Government and Consultancy. He has successfully delivered or directed a range of projects in urban, regional and rural environments, including the City of Ryde Integrated Transport Strategy which received the AITPM’s national Excellence Award in recognition of professional excellence and innovation to improve communities. Michael is a highly collaborative leader and brings this focus to all his roles. He previously served as the Area Manager for SMEC’s North Sydney office before moving across to KBR in April last year to take on the role of Industry Lead for Transport Planning. In this role, Michael has responsibility for the transport planning, traffic and road safety engineering, and traffic modelling disciplines within NSW and the ACT. Michael is also a Lead Road Safety Auditor and has delivered audits for Transport for NSW and Roads and Maritime Services NSW, Sydney Metro, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, local government, consultants and contractors. He is passionate about road safety and knowledge sharing with industry stakeholders and peers.
Sabine Leila Lepoultier | Senior Civil Engineer | KBR
Sabine Leila Lepoultier is a Senior Civil Engineer at KBR and has experience working as Design Lead on a broad range of projects related to transport, road, and civil engineering.
Key projects she has helped deliver include the Bong Bong Road and Station Street, Cleveland Road & Fowlers Road Upgrade (West Dapto), Sydney Metro Design Services’ conversion of the Sydenham to Bankstown line from heavy rail to metro, TLC Homestead Wallington (Melbourne), in addition to a range of residential, commercial, mixed-use, warehouse, Aged and Childcare centre projects. Sabine’s engineering experience spans road modelling (including access or ramp roads), design of general road facilities such as speed humps and kerbs, design of utilities and drainage infrastructure (wastewater dam), and related facilities in both 2D and 3D environments. Sabine has provided design advice to architects (in relation to car park layouts, intersection designs and access treatments), has prepared civil and road engineering documentation, engaged with local government on engineering matters and supervised engineering tasks.
Sabine possesses a solid understanding of active transport design and enjoys working with peers to advance optimal evidence-based outcomes.
Marty Prowse | CEO | Matrix
Marty Prowse is the CEO of Matrix Traffic and Transport Data and has more than 36 years’ experience in the traffic and transport industry. A qualified Town Planner, Marty began his career counting cars as a university job — an experience that sparked a lifelong passion for traffic data and its critical role in shaping better transport outcomes.
Since establishing Matrix in 2005, Marty has led the company’s growth from a small Brisbane office to an international operation with offices across Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Under his leadership, Matrix has built a strong reputation for data integrity, innovation and quality, delivering projects ranging from local traffic studies to major infrastructure developments.
Marty is widely regarded for his deep understanding of traffic data collection technologies and his practical insights into how high-quality data underpins sound transport planning, road safety improvements and evidence-based decision-making. He is an active member of the Australian Institute of Traffic Planning and Management (AITPM) and a regular speaker at industry conferences and workshops.
A passionate advocate for active transport, Marty combines technical expertise with real-world experience to champion better outcomes for communities. His presentation, “Why True Data Matters?”, challenges practitioners to think critically about data quality, methodology and the growing importance of reliable evidence in today’s evolving transport landscape.
Ian Brocklehurst | Transport Planning Team Leader for NSW and ACT | Arup
Ian is a seasoned transport planner, project manager and people leader with more than 15 years’ experience delivering movement and place outcomes across Australia, New Zealand and Arup's APAC region. He brings deep expertise in public transport, transport planning, multimodal integration and evidence-based decision making, with a strong focus on creating meaningful, sustainable, people‑centred cities and precincts. Ian leads Arup's NSW/ACT Transport Planning a dedicated and passionate group of planners, engineers, modellers, analysts and specialists who focus on shaping a better world.
Nick Karahlis | Head of Product - Traffic & Transportation | Compass IoT
Nick is a highly experienced Traffic and Transport Engineer with more than 30 years of professional experience across both the public and private sectors, delivering a wide range of civil engineering and transportation projects. He holds a Master of Engineering Science (Traffic and Transportation) from the University of New South Wales (UNSW).
He has extensive expertise across all areas of traffic and transportation engineering, including traffic impact assessments, traffic modelling, transport policy development, road safety, Local Area Traffic Management (LATM), he has coordinated multiple traffic, transport parking and bicycle studies and transport logistics for major events.
Nick currently leads the transport technology product development at Compass IoT, an Australian road intelligence company at the forefront of global innovation. In this role, he is responsible for the development of award-winning traffic and transport applications based on data derived from connected vehicles. Compass IoT, global data leader in road intelligence, delivering advanced applications such as path analysis surveys, near-miss safety analysis, origin–destination analytics, and live traffic data solutions that are transforming the traffic and transport industry worldwide.
Nick has presented at national and international conferences: the ITS World Congress in Dubai (2024), Traffic Tech Gulf in Doha, Qatar, and the ASECAP (European Motorway Operators) Conference in Milan (2024) and has also co-authored academic papers on connected vehicle data. His presentations include the ITS European Congress (paper titled Leveraging Naturalistic Connected LCV Data for Spatial Surrogate Safety Measures Applications).
Nicole Vukic | Founding Director | Avandra Advisory and NSW/ACT Branch President
Nicole is a Transport Planner and Engineer with over 25 years of experience in specialist and multi-disciplinary consultancies. Nicole’s experience encompasses all stages of the project life cycle from strategic planning to design and operation of transport infrastructure.
For over half her career, Nicole has managed technical transport planning and modelling teams, which have grown and transformed under her leadership. Nicole is passionate about working on city-shaping projects, contributing to the creation of great places and influencing how people move between these places efficiently and sustainably, now and into the future.
Valerie Giammarco | Director - Urban Design | Transport for NSW
Valerie Giammarco is a Director of Urban Design at Transport for NSW. She comes to us from Dharawal country. Valerie is an executive level people leader, place-maker and planner with over 20 years of experience. She has extensive experience in stakeholder engagement, transport planning, precinct design & infrastructure delivery.
Valerie has worked in private practice, local and state governments. She is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects and Planning Institute of Australia where is an active member of the NSW Transport Planning and Women in Leadership Networks.
Valerie enjoys networking and mentoring, she champions diverse and inclusive workplaces.
Ben Nacard | Senior Manager Urban Design | Transport for NSW
Ben Nacard is a Senior Manager Urban Design at Transport for NSW who lives on Gadigal country in inner Sydney. Ben is an urban designer and people leader with over 25 years experience in education, writing, and professional practice in Australia and overseas. He has expertise in design excellence and design leadership, and deep technical knowledge in the development and delivery of complex public transport and civic infrastructure.
Brooke Wharton | Director - Vibrancy | Transport for NSW
Brooke Wharton is the Director Vibrancy at Transport for NSW. Brooke is an urban and regional planner and project manager with a genuine passion for urban renewal and placemaking. With over 20 years of experience within the development industry, she has worked for private consultancies and both local and state governments.
Brooke has a focus on facilitating innovative, practical and creative concepts to support social and economic development initiatives. At Transport for NSW Brooke leads a multi-disciplinary team to deliver a program of investment in New South Wales helping to address the walkability, wellbeing, amenity and place activation of our streets and transport hub precincts. Programs include the Safer Cities Program, Open Streets, Community Improvement Districts pilot, Walks Near Me digital platform, Permit/Plug/Play, Places to Love, reVITALise, and more.
