Aimsun and TomTom partner to accelerate transport planning

TomTom and Aimsun have announced a strategic partnership to help cities and transport authorities deliver smarter, faster mobility solutions. 

This collaboration brings together TomTom’s trusted maps and traffic data with Aimsun’s advanced simulation tools, including the new Aimsun Start ready-to-calibrate model. With Aimsun Start, transport modellers can skip weeks of manual setup and begin their projects immediately. This is possible thanks to high-quality, simulation-ready models built from accurate network geometry and origin–destination matrices derived from TomTom’s reliable and representative datasets. 

Australia has been the testbed for the pre-launch of Aimsun Start, where it was proven to speed up the model setup stage for transport simulation projects by approximately 75%.

A Real-World Example of Speed and Precision

Recent projects in Australia have demonstrated the impact of Aimsun Start in supporting the efficient delivery of high-quality transport models for new development areas. Working with SCT Consulting, the objective was to model a growing residential precinct efficiently and accurately to support land-use development in the ACT.

Aimsun provided an Aimsun Start ready-to-calibrate model to support SCT in delivering a robust base model. By leveraging TomTom’s origin–destination data, SCT established initial demand patterns for a small network without relying solely on traditional surveys — significantly accelerating delivery timelines and reducing data-collection costs.

As an additional enhancement, Aimsun imported signal-operations data to improve the accuracy and operational realism of the model. This project is just one example of how consultancies in Australia and New Zealand are embracing Aimsun Start as an integral part of their modelling workflow
