About this event
Bite‑sized talks, big ideas. Hobart Transport Bites brings together local government, state planning and industry to spotlight practical innovations shaping how Hobart moves. Hear from Nigel Caldera and Allison “Allie” Blazosky (City of Hobart) on a new Active Transport Dashboard and the forthcoming Hobart Bike Plan—turning scattered walking and cycling data into a single, decision‑ready source of truth and outlining a connected bike network for more everyday riding. Howard Mitchell (Department of State Growth) will discuss Mornington Area Road Improvements —what the analysis found, how community input shaped the options, and what’s next for this critical eastern gateway. Finally, Mathew Brooks (pitt&sherry) shares PhD insights on AI and Vehicle‑to‑Infrastructure signal control, showing how connected vehicles could help optimise SCATS™ operations to cut congestion and delays. Come for fast, focused presentations and stay for Q&A and conversation with Hobart’s transport community. Light catering & drinks provided.
Registrations close Thursday 12 March 2026.

Speakers
Nigel Caldera | Urban Active Transport Officer | City of Hobart
Nigel Caldera is the Urban Active Transport Officer at the City of Hobart. He is spearheading the development of Hobart’s new active transport data dashboard to support transport planning. Nigel himself often arrives to work aboard an e‑scooter, sometimes even balancing a harvest of apricots from his tree.
Howard Mitchell | Transport Network Planner | Department of State Growth
Howard Mitchell is a Transport Network Planner at the Department of State Growth. Originally a mechanical engineer, during his career he has switched from facilitating the flow of coal and iron ore from mines to ports, to trying to improve people’s mobility across transport networks. In his eight years with State Growth, Howard has focused on transport planning for Greater Hobart including work on the Sorell to Hobart Planning Study, the South East Traffic Solution (SETS), the Hobart western bypass tunnel study, the Rokeby Corridor planning study, the Mornington Traffic Solution study and activation of the Northern Suburbs Transit Corridor.
Mathew Brooks | Principal Traffic Engineer | pitt&sherry
Mathew Brooks is a Principal Traffic Engineer at pitt&sherry with over 20 years’ experience in traffic engineering and modelling. He has a long history in transport research, having lectured in Transportation Engineering at the University of Tasmania and supervised numerous research students. Mathew is currently completing a PhD at the University of Technology Sydney under a National Industry PhD Program scholarship, where he is investigating how data from autonomous and connected vehicles can enhance adaptive traffic signal operation through advanced modelling and AI‑driven control techniques
